The Annual Meeting of the 82nd Ave of Roses Business Association was on Tuesday, May 24, hosted by the Blue Room Bar at Cartlandia. The first drink was free for every attendee, and we had a light dinner buffet with food from Anything’s Pastable, Choles SoCal Mexican Grill, In and Out Kitchen, Mojo Crepes, Pupuseria La Migueleña, and Thai Mango.
The board awarded Sargent’s Motorsports a Founding Member award in recognition of their being a member and driving force behind the 82nd Ave of Roses Business Association since our founding in 1978. Vice President Gary Sargent was there to accept, and he presented the roses to his wife afterwards. Secretary-Treasurer Nancy Chapin of TSG Services received the Spirit of the District Award for her tireless work on our behalf.
Brian Wong, Chair of the 82nd Ave Improvement Coalition presented us with a vision of the future: reclaiming underused and unused space along 82nd Ave for public greenspace. This included temporarily turning unused lots into dog parks, parking spaces into parklets, possibly even employing the same strategy the city uses for NATO parkway during the summer, closing one lane in order to provide more and safer pedestrian walkways and bikeways.
He passed around some visuals from a University of Oregon Design Studio class which inspired this line of thought. Their initiative was to imagine 82nd Ave 10 years from now. Brian’s timeline is a little shorter than that. If he gets good community feedback, and business buy-in, he’d like to start experimenting with pop-up parks as early as Summer 2017.
After that, we held elections.
